What are solar panels?

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels convert daylight into electricity for your home. This electricity can power appliances, lighting and electric heating, reducing the amount you need to buy from the grid.

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, with output varying according to the season, weather, shading and the direction your roof faces. Your savings depend on how much electricity the system produces and how much you use at home.

Adding battery storage lets you save some of the electricity generated during the day for use later, including in the evening.

Do solar panels work in Scotland?

Domestic solar panel output in Scotland

Despite our reputation for poor weather and overcast conditions, Solar panels still work effectively in Scotland. Solar panels are designed to generate electricity from daylight, without needing direct sunshine, so they are suitable for the Scottish climate.

According to a study carried out by Edinburgh University, Researchers concluded that Solar PV systems in Scotland can generate almost the same amount of electricity as the rest of the UK .

The chart above shows domestic solar panel output in a variety of postcode areas in the UK, including Scotland. The study showed that that the energy output for a domestic installation in Edinburgh is 10.6 kWh/day, which is only 13% less than London, at 12.2 kWh/day.

The chart also shows higher output for the Stranraer example than for Birmingham, illustrating that solar panels can perform well in Scotland. Output varies with location and installation conditions, so a property-specific assessment is the best way to estimate how much electricity your system could generate.

Factors to consider before installing solar panels in Scotland:

  1. Scotland benefits from long daylight hours in the summer, which boosts solar energy production during the warmer months. Days are shorter in the winter which will reduce energy output, but panels will still generate some electricity.
  2. Solar panels are designed to capture diffused sunlight so they will still function on cloudy days.
  3. Solar panels generally operate more efficiently at lower cell temperatures. Scotland’s cooler climate can help limit heat-related efficiency losses, although electricity output still depends on the available daylight.

Can I get funding for solar panels in Scotland?

Funding for solar panels in Scotland depends on your household circumstances, your property and the support available through individual schemes. Eligibility for energy-efficiency support does not automatically mean solar panels will be included.

ECO Scotland is no longer accepting new ECO4 enquiries. For advice on funding and other support that may be available to you, contact Home Energy Scotland.

Homeowners considering a paid alternative can also explore Buzzii Solar’s solar and battery subscription, with £0 upfront and ongoing monthly payments. This is separate from government funding and subject to suitability and subscription terms.

What is the ECO Grant Scheme?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a UK Government scheme that requires obligated energy suppliers to fund energy-efficiency improvements in eligible homes. It focuses on lower-income households and less energy-efficient properties, with improvements selected following an assessment.

ECO4 has been extended to 31 December 2026 to allow suppliers to complete existing obligations and remedy non-compliant installations. This extension does not increase supplier targets or guarantee funding for new applications. ECO Scotland is no longer accepting new enquiries under the scheme.

Solar panel grant in Scotland: eligibility

Eligibility for solar panel grants in Scotland depends on the funding scheme, your household circumstances and your home’s energy performance. Meeting a scheme’s initial criteria does not guarantee that solar panels will be funded.

Property eligibility

Under ECO4, improvements are considered as part of a whole-house assessment. Factors such as the property’s EPC rating, existing heating and insulation help determine which measures are suitable. Solar panels may form part of an approved package, rather than being offered as a standalone grant.

Household eligibility

Depending on the funding route, eligibility may involve qualifying benefits, household income or other circumstances. ECO4 Flex provides additional routes for some households that do not receive qualifying benefits. Funding and installation remain subject to assessment and supplier approval.

What if I don't qualify for a solar grant?

If you don’t qualify for a solar grant, you can still explore installing solar panels and battery storage through a paid subscription.

Buzzii Solar offers eligible homeowners in Scotland a solar and battery system with £0 upfront and ongoing monthly payments. Solar panels generate electricity during the day, while the battery stores surplus energy for use later, helping reduce the electricity you buy from the grid.

The monthly cost and potential savings depend on your property and proposed system. Ask for a personalised quote so you can compare the subscription payments with the estimated energy savings and understand the terms before deciding.

Solar panels can reduce the electricity you buy from the grid. Energy Saving Trust estimates that a typical home solar panel system could also save around one tonne of carbon each year, depending on where you live in the UK.

Accessing A Solar Panel Grant In Scotland: FAQ

Are there any grants for solar panels in Scotland?

Some households may receive help with solar panels through wider energy-efficiency schemes, depending on eligibility, property assessment and available funding. Solar panels are not automatically included.

Home Energy Scotland’s Grant and Loan scheme no longer funds standard solar PV panels or battery storage for new applications. Contact Home Energy Scotland for advice on other support that may be available. ECO Scotland is no longer accepting new ECO4 enquiries.

01. Is it worth installing solar panels in Scotland?

It is definitely worth getting solar panels installed if you live in Scotland. A typical solar PV installation will generate around 3,000 kWh of electricity.

While according to OFGEM the typical household uses approximately 2,900 kWh of electricity annually.

Solar panels function by capturing sunlight. So even on a cloudy day you can make substantial savings on electric bills.

02. Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

In Scotland, the majority of buildings have a roof pitch of between 30 – 50 degrees which is ok for solar panels.

Ideally, a section of your roof should face South to maximise the amount of solar energy you can generate, but SE and SW are also suitable for solar PV installs. There may be other considerations such as shading and trees that should taken into account.

03. Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Unless your property lies in a conservation area or is a listed building, solar panels are seen as a permitted development.

04. Are solar batteries installed through the ECO scheme?

ECO grants for solar panels only cover the cost of a solar panel installation so solar batteries are not provided. Although you can add this yourself at a later date. But even without a solar battery you can still reduce your bills by up to 70% by generating your own electricity.

Who qualifies for free solar panels?

Government-funded schemes have previously provided grants towards solar panels for eligible households in Scotland. However, funding schemes and eligibility criteria change over time, and free solar panels are not currently available to every household.
New support for home energy improvements is expected to develop under the UK Government’s Warm Homes Plan, although the support available in Scotland may differ from schemes operating elsewhere in the UK.
If you don’t qualify for grant-funded solar panels, you can still reduce your electricity bills by installing solar panels and battery storage privately.

How do I apply for free solar panels in Scotland?

Applying for a solar PV grant in Scotland is straightforward. There is no lengthy application process and no complicated forms. If you are eligible we do all the work for you and claim the grant funding from our ECO funder.

01. Check your eligibility for a solar panel grant

Funding for free solar panels in Scotland has changed following the end of the ECO4 scheme. There is currently no single nationwide scheme offering free solar panels to all Scottish households, and eligibility for funded energy improvements depends on the support available in your area and your individual circumstances.

You can check what help may be available before deciding whether grant-funded or privately installed solar panels are the best option for your home.

02. Arrange a roof survey

If you decide to go ahead with solar panels, a survey will normally be carried out to check that your home and roof are suitable for solar PV.

The survey will consider factors such as the size, orientation and condition of your roof, potential shading and the most suitable position for the solar panels. Your electricity usage can also be considered when designing a system that is appropriate for your home.

03. Installing your solar PV panels

Once your solar PV system has been designed and agreed, your installer will arrange a suitable date for the installation. Most domestic solar panel installations can be completed with relatively little disruption to your home.

Once installed, the system will be tested and commissioned, allowing you to start generating your own renewable electricity and reducing the amount of energy you need to buy from the grid.

What if I don't qualify for free solar panels?

If you don’t qualify for grant-funded solar panels, you can still install solar PV privately and benefit from generating your own electricity and reducing the amount of energy you buy from the grid.

Solar panels can also be combined with battery storage, allowing more of the electricity generated during the day to be stored and used when you need it.
